His Excellency the Governor has the honour to present for the consideration of the Finance Committee of the Legislative Council the items (Nos. 10 to 13 of 1935) of supplementary expenditure set out below.

Provision made in Estimates (page 104 sub-head 35) $ 10,000

A sum of $5,940 is payable as compensation for the old building, on Inland Lot No. 1104 (Arsenal Street), which has lately been resumed. The amount provided in the Estimates is required for other Government resumptions, with the exception of a balance of $940 approximately.

In order that the transaction in respect of Inland Lot No. 1104 may now be completed, a supplementary vote for $5,000 is requested.

12.-22, Medical Department:- Repairs to Disinfecting and Fumigat- ing plant

1. Since Government took over the Disinfecting and Fumigating Bureau on October 1st, 1934, various essential and urgent repairs have been carried out on the newly acquired plant.

2. It is now found that the following further expenditure will be

necessary during 1935-

A sum of $27.000 was approved for this work in 1934, but owing to the contractor's failure to complete the work, expenditure of $10,587 only was incurred.

The provision of $2,000 in the 1935 Estimates is for retention money only, so as the work has proceeded an additional sum of $12,000 is required to complete, during 1935.

From the unexpended balance of $16,413 available at the end of 1934, a re-vote of the sum of $12,000 only, is therefore requested.

13.-29, Charitable Services: -7, General Chinese Charities Fund ...$

Provision made in Estimates (page 92 sub-head 7) ..$ 110,000 Owing to the very great difficulty experienced in obtaining the cus- tomary revenue from voluntary sources and to the diminution of the revenue from house property which forms the bulk of the endowment, immediate financial assistance is necessary for the three hospitals adminis- tered by the Tung Wah Hospital Committee, namely, Tung Wah Hospital, Kwong Wah Hospital and Tung Wah Eastern Hospital. A supplementary vote for $47,482 is requested, being the equivalent dollar for dollar of special collections made by the Hospital Directors since 17th September, 1934.
